Psychotherapist and Counsellor

Karl Barry MIACP, MSc Psychotherapy, B.A. Psychology

Welcome to All of You Counselling and Psychotherapy. My name is Karl Barry, a professionally qualified and fully accredited psychotherapist and counsellor who works with individuals, couples, and elite athletes. I hold a first-class honours Master’s Degree in Psychotherapy from Dublin City University and an Honours Degree in Psychology from Dublin Business School (DBS). In 2025, I was awarded a PhD scholarship at Dublin City University to undertake doctoral research exploring how emerging technologies, including generative AI, are shaping reflective practice and professional identity in psychotherapy.

Counselling and Psychotherapy with Karl

I find the work I do with my clients very rewarding and I feel privileged to witness the transformations people make as they go through the process of therapy. Helping them to discover both internal and external resources to cope with the issues they may be facing, developing self-acceptance and confidence to truly believe and trust in themselves and guiding them to find a path which leads to the type of life they would like to live.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. They may find that they are lacking in motivation, feeling down or empty, or find it difficult to stay connected to people around them. Some may feel anxious and have noticed that their anxiety is preventing them from living a full and happy life. Others may be struggling within their close relationships, perhaps finding themselves repeating the same negative patterns that lead to the same negative outcomes over and over again or having difficulties with intimacy or connection. Some may have had a traumatic experience or difficult life event that they may be struggling to overcome. I work with clients with issues such as these examples and help clients with many other issues that can be addressed through the process of psychotherapy.

Building a strong, trusting relationship is key in therapy. First and foremost, I offer my clients a safe, confidential space where they can discuss the issues they may be facing without any fear of judgement. Each client's issues are unique to them and as such, I adapt how I work to meet each of my client's needs. I only use the most up-to-date, evidence-based psychotherapies such as Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic, Person-Centered, Systemic, Psychosexual, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Transactional Analysis to help clients through their difficulties. This gives them the confidence to know that they are in safe hands and that the work that we do will always have their best interest at heart. Please feel free to see how my clients have found working with me on my testimonials page.

For some people taking that first step can be a daunting experience. Will I be a right fit for therapy or will therapy be the right fit for me? You may find it helpful to take a quick look at our "Is therapy for you?"  page to help you make a more informed decision.

Research

My MSc thesis at Dublin City University focused on the psychological and emotional impact of career-ending injuries on elite-level athletes as they transitioned out of sport. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), I explored how identity, loss, and meaning-making came into play during that period of profound change.

I have also worked as a Research Project Supervisor for students on the Level 8 Bachelor of Arts in Holistic Counselling & Psychotherapy at The International College of Personal & Professional Development (ICPPD). Supporting students in designing and completing ethical, reflective, and meaningful research has been a rewarding part of my work.

My current research focus, as part of my PhD at Dublin City University, explores how generative AI may be influencing reflective practice and the evolving professional identity of psychotherapists.

I'm genuinely excited to be engaged in this work. I believe it’s an area full of potential, but one that also calls for careful and critical engagement. My hope is to contribute to an open and balanced conversation — one that considers both the risks and the possibilities of AI in therapy, and which could benefit not just practitioners and clients, but also fields beyond psychotherapy and psychology.
